New Moon in Uttara Bhadrapada: the Spiritual Warrior Rests / March 18, 2026 at 21:23 ET
This New Moon is in the sensitive yet fierce sign Uttara Bhadrapada, a degree of sidereal Pisces whose name means the “latter legs of the funeral cot” or “latter blessed” in Sanskrit. It’s the sign of the spiritual warrior, one who is tuned in and ready to fight for justice and the light. This is a complex and powerful sign ruled by Jupiter and Saturn and connected to Agni (god of fire) and Ahirbudhnya, the serpent of the deep who “carries the burden of the world.” Its Piscean nature brings heightened intuition and sensitivity, while its Jupiter-Saturn rulership offers idealism, purpose, and the call to rise into mastery.
Like a superhero, this New Moon gives us an inner calm, heightened intuition, and the strength to walk through fire. It carries magnetism, power, kindness, and a sense of virtue which chooses the highest good. Yet there can also be a heaviness present, a feeling that the weight of the world is on our shoulders. But still, Jupiter reminds us there is opportunity and growth, even in difficulty.
Being the first New Moon after the eclipses and a few days with the recent chaos-makers in the sky (Mars, Rahu, Mercury Retrograde), whatever darkness is surfacing now, individually or collectively, is ready to be transformed into light. But we have to begin with ourselves. We are all moving from darkness to light, often through the discomfort of letting go of the familiar.
Uttara Bhadrapada stirs the subconscious, bringing unsupportive patterns, outdated beliefs, toxic habits, and hidden truths to the surface so they can be burned away. This is the sign of the funeral pyre, the kundalini, and the spiritual warrior. For our shakti (our inner/spiritual awakening) to rise, we must burn off the attachments, fears, insecurities, and the stories that keep us small. These are what stand in the way of our authenticity. The purpose of this New Moon is purification, to shake us out of darkness and into awareness. It’s uncomfortable work that asks us to get out of our own way and lean into the process, even when we want to avoid it.
This New Moon comes after an intense stretch and begins to shift us toward Venus, the Sun, and Saturn. Venus and the Sun help us reconnect with exuberance, joy and harmony, while Saturn asks us to “do something” with it: to create, to be vulnerable, and in this sign, to purify. But Saturn is combust: meaning it’s traveling so close to the Sun that we can’t see it in the night sky. And so its usual strength is diminished, and its typical push for discipline and commitment has softened. This connection to the Sun can also bring exhaustion.
So, rest. Know that this has been an incredibly challenging planetary line up we have been managing (similar line up to Covid days). This New Moon is about release, burning the past, finding inner strength, and honoring your own hero’s journey. If you feel off track, take time to reflect on your path thus far, the hurdles you’ve overcome and the resilience and resolve you’ve built. This Moon sign is empathetic and understands this work is not easy. It has the strength to face what arises, but it needs solitude to rest, rejuvenate and realign. Ruled by Saturn and Jupiter, it knows there is no way around discomfort; we must move through it. It’s showing up to prepare us for an inner battle against ego, expectation, and anything misaligned with our evolution. Every hero’s journey includes hardship. This New Moon supports us in embracing the spiritual warrior within, while remembering that sometimes the hero needs rest before re-engaging and resolving.
To consider:
Have you been a bearer of light, or feeding fear?
Are you acting as a spiritual warrior, or simply waging war?
Where are you being called to focus your attention?
What attachments, fears, or identities are ready to be released?
Is there a battle within you or your community?
Can you pause and feel what is truly aligned?
What discomfort is you moving through?
Do you feel scared, strong, tired, or ready?
What is coming to an end? What is ready to be burned away?
What new path lies beyond the ash?
It’s okay not to have all the answers. Whatever is surfacing now is ready to be explored more deeply. Even the darkest moments can lead to the brightest revelations. Uttara Bhadrapada benefits from meditation, swedana or intentional sweating, saunas, homa or fire ceremonies, fasting, shavasana, yoga nidra and deeply resting.
