New Moon in sidereal Leo: Magha - DEVOTION / BELONGING Aug 23, 2025 at 2:06am ET

This New Moon falls in sidereal Leo in Magha, “the mighty one,” a sign tied to lineage – familial, spiritual, political, and otherwise chosen. Magha’s deities are the Pitris, the ancestors who helped pave our paths. This Moon directs attention to our lineage(s), their impact on us and the impact we pass on with their influence. We stand on the shoulders of those before us while our choices ripple forward into future generations.

This New Moon sitting with and ruled by Ketu asks us to look at who we’re standing with, and to make sure the alignments are honest and reciprocal rather than blind allegiance out of habit or obligation. Ketu can create confusion and uncertainty. It comes along to create or dissolve karmic attachments. It reminds us to close our eyes and listen to our inner voice even if it goes against “the rules” we’ve been living by or goes against our “lineage” in some way. It asks us to release what is no longer ours to hold, to intuitively trust when the karma is complete. If we are stubborn and resisting change, Ketu can take things from us in a devastating fashion, forcing us to face our karmas and let go of bonds rooted in outdated roles.

This New Moon also opens the doorway into eclipse season: a time when karmas intensify, events accelerate and illusions dissolve. Areas in our lives touched by the eclipse points get magnified as hidden truths are revealed, personally and globally. The news cycle tends to be full of bombshells in the days and weeks surrounding an eclipse (Sept 7 lunar / Sept 21 solar). While it’s a time of intensity, it’s also a time of honesty and realizations - even some that may be hard to digest. Old stories, ancestral imprints, and inherited roles may rise up for us to review and release with this New Moon and the upcoming eclipses. The next few weeks may be tricky as we process the events around us and within us. New Moons offer recalibration and the possibility for a new beginnings. This New Moon in sidereal Leo asks: are we living from the authority of our authenticity or from the weight of expectations handed down through family or society?

New Moon Journaling Prompts to consider:

•What ancestral patterns feel ready to end with me?

•How can I honor the past and step into the future?

•How can I honor my roots without being bound by them?

•How do I define true leadership in my life?

•Where am I showing up as a leader? And where am I shying away from this role?

•What throne am I sitting on that may no longer belong to me?

•Would my ancestors be proud of me?

•Will my descendants stand tall and strong because of my alignments and actions?
