New Moon Dec 19, 2025 at 20:43 ET in Mula: The Roots Reveal and Release
We finish 2025 with a New Moon in Mula, a fierce and revealing degree of sidereal Sagittarius, the Truth Seeker. “Mula,” meaning “roots” and whose symbol is a tied bunch of roots, fearlessly goes to the heart of the matter, as its name implies. It is inquisitive and ambitious, and dives into the depths of things without ego or fear blocking it. Its purpose is to uncover the truth and to dissolve any unhealthy attachments to falsehoods. It helps us clear away the illusion and the stories that have clouded us. Be aware: this New Moon isn’t gentle by nature, but what’s being revealed can’t be ignored.
Mula's presiding deity is Niritti, the Goddess of Dissolution and Sorrows, often compared to Kali the fearless goddess of destruction and death, who breaks up our illusions, stomps out our egos and helps us release from our attachments. Nirriti is similar in that she makes us actively let go of whatever is in our way, even if it stirs up unpleasant realizations. Nirriti and Mula remind us that pain is inevitable but suffering or other emotional responses are up to us. She shows us that the trappings of the physical world, including our mortality, are fleeting.
Nirriti is the older sister of Lakshmi, and her goal is to clear the path of illusion for True Beauty, Abundance and Love to flourish. Keep this in mind as you do the work this New Moon in Mula and Nirriti are presenting because it’s not always enjoyable — but it is necessary to embrace these endings so our next steps and true Selves can be revealed and grow.
This New Moon wants us to moving forward on a path free from obstacles and inhibitions, and the false stories we tell ourselves. As Mula’s symbol reminds us, none of this is possible without proper support from our roots: from our people, ancestral or chosen, bound together and keeping us grounded. Purging and cleansing on every level (such as fasting, tackling clutter or letting go of unhealthy associations) is highly supported with this lunar cycle. Remember that purging in any capacity is a mental and emotional process, so be prepared for these aspects to emerge. Mula favors herbal formulas and adaptogens as well as connecting with skilled practitioners to help us process stress and go deep in our revealing and healing.
To ponder:
•What truth am I no longer able to ignore?
•Where am I attached to a story that no longer serves me?
•Where am I being asked to go deeper into an aspect of my life?
•What needs to be released so my path can clear?
•Is there any ego, fear or resistance blocking my way?
•What is causing the most sorrow right now? What's beneath that?
•What’s being uprooted?
•Who or what truly supports my grounding right now?
*Supported foods and activities (always defer to your intuition and your practitioner): practice mulabhanda and yoga asana focused on the legs, core and root chakra / take slow deep belly breaths / drink dashamula tea / eat root vegetables / feet on the ground and 3 belly breaths before eating / meditate visualizing roots growing connecting you to the earth / gather with those who support you
