Yoga, which means “union”, helps to do just this: bring the body, mind and soul into a state of union, and to unify with the higher Consciousness. With Ayurvedic Yoga, the instructor chooses what poses are appropriate to bring the client back into balance. For example, a “vata” type person with a vata imbalance might be advised to not do sun salutations or headstands, but instead to practice restorative yoga and more grounding postures. A person with high “pitta” may be advised to switch to moon salutations and spinal twists instead of practicing “Hot Box” yoga 4 times a week. While a person with high “kapha” may be advised to do more rigorous asanas like headstands, camel pose, or warrior 2 instead of resting in shavasana for 30 minutes as they might like. The idea behind these few examples is that particular recommendations for people with certain doshic imbalances (the high “vata, pitta and kapha”) would not be appropriate for people experiencing different imbalances. In fact, some asanas can increase an already heightened state of imbalance. Ayurvedic Yoga determines what imbalance is occurring, and chooses appropriate asanas, pranayama (breathing techniques) and marma therapy (Ayurvedic acupressure which can be incorporated into poses) to help to bring a state of balance back.
