Jyotish, the “Science of Light,” is a
sister science of Ayurveda and has been used for thousands of years
as a guide to healing and as a tool for insight. In this class, we
will cover the basics of Jyotish (or Vedic Astrology), including
the houses, planets, signs, and the nakshatras (the “lunar
mansions” or 27 signs that are specific to Jyotish), the dashas
(planetary periods you live your life through), the karmic relevance
of Rahu and Ketu (the north and south nodes of the moon), and how
to discover your dharma (your purpose or path) from your chart. We
will also learn how to draw up a chart, and will learn some basics
of reading a chart. No previous knowledge of astrology is necessary.
Class fee includes a print out of your birth chart and dasha chart.
Please include your full birth name, date, time, and place of birth
when registering for this workshop.

Intro to Ayurveda |

Come and learn the basics of Ayurveda, the 5000+ year old “Science of Life” from India, which is considered by many scholars to be the Mother of all Healing. This holistic and highly individualized system places great emphasis on prevention through proper diet and lifestyle practices (such as yoga, meditation, and pranayama). Come and discover your “Prakruti” (your Ayurvedic constitutional type); learn about the “gunas” (the 20 universal qualities that are the language of Ayurveda) and how they are present in your daily life; learn about the 5 elements (ether, air, fire, water, earth) and how they relate to Vata, Pitta and Kapha (the Ayurvedic “doshas” or bodily humours); and learn some basic Ayurvedic recipes to take home and start cooking with.

How to Read the Lines on
the Face and the Tongue |

Learning how to read the lines and markings on the
face and tongue can be a helpful tool to maintaining health. We will
discover what these lines mean, and which organs, emotions and chakras
correspond. We will also discuss what yoga asanas (postures), pranayama
(breathing techniques), marma points (Ayurvedic acupressure points)
and foods can help alleviate the stress the organs are experiencing.
A class for the curious that will undoubtedly give you months of
boredom-free subway riding.

| Basics of Ayurvedic Nutrition |
 |
A good meal and strong “agni” (digestive
fire) are the keys to good health in Ayurveda. The workshop will
begin with an exercise in discovering your “Prakruti” (your
Ayurvedic constitution), followed by a brief overview of basic
Ayurveda, paying special attention to the “gunas” (the
20 universal qualities), and the “doshas” (Vata, Pitta
and Kapha – the Ayurvedic bodily humours). We will discuss
food combining, the 6 tastes, and what foods are appropriate for
your doshic type and for the imbalance you may be experiencing.
We will learn some great Ayurvedic tricks to keeping your agni
alive and you well, especially during the cold months ahead. We
will also spend some time discussing women’s health and nutrition.
You will leave with some great recipes and great info and an itchin’ to
get cookin’.
